Travel Math™: What Does Your Cruise Really Cost?
Travel Math™: Why the Price of Your Cruise Isn't the Whole Cost of Your Vacation
💙 WHAT IS TRAVEL MATH™?
Travel Math™ is our approach to looking beyond the advertised price of a vacation to understand its real cost, real inclusions, and real value—so you can make smarter decisions about where your vacation dollars matter most.
Source Article: This Travel Math™ discussion was inspired by recent FOX6 News reporting about Mexico's increased cruise passenger fee and additional increases currently scheduled for future years.

🚢 The Cruise Fare Is Only Part of the Vacation
You find a cruise for $799 per person.
Great price—but is that what the vacation will actually cost?
Not necessarily.
Depending on the trip, your complete vacation budget might also include:
✈️ Airfare
🏨 Pre- or post-cruise hotel
🚐 Transportation
⚓ Taxes and destination fees
💵 Gratuities
🍹 Beverage packages
📶 Wi-Fi
🏝️ Excursions
🛡️ Travel protection
🧳 Baggage fees
🎁 Onboard spending
That's where Travel Math™ comes in.
We're not simply asking:
“What does the cruise cost?”
We're asking:
“What is this VACATION realistically going to cost—and what am I getting for that money?”
🇲🇽 A Real-World Example: Mexico's Cruise Fee
FOX6 News recently reported that Mexico increased its fee for foreign cruise passengers from $5 to $10 per person beginning August 1, 2026, affecting travelers visiting popular Mexican cruise destinations.
Additional increases are currently scheduled: $15 per passenger beginning July 1, 2027, and $21 beginning August 1, 2028.
Does another $10 make cruising unaffordable?
Probably not.
But it demonstrates an important Travel Math™ principle:
💙 Little numbers become bigger numbers when you multiply them by people and add them to the rest of the vacation.
A family of four pays another $40 at the current $10 rate. Add transportation, gratuities, excursions, Wi-Fi, beverages and other expenses, and the final vacation cost can look very different from the original advertised fare.
💙 Cost Is Only Half of Travel Math™
Here's the other side of the equation:
PRICE ≠ VALUE
A cruise may include accommodations, transportation between destinations, dining, entertainment, activities and access to multiple ports—all within one vacation.
That's why the cheapest option isn't automatically the best value, and the more expensive option isn't automatically a bad value.
Consider:
🌊 Balcony or excursion?
Would you rather spend $500 upgrading your cabin or creating an unforgettable experience in port?
✈️ Nonstop or connecting flight?
Would spending $150 more be worthwhile if it gives you six additional hours at your destination?
🏨 Fly in early or travel the day of the cruise?
A pre-cruise hotel costs money—but reducing the risk of missing your ship has value too.
There isn't one correct answer.
Your Travel Math™ should reflect what matters to YOU.
🧮 Before You Book, Ask Five Questions
Don't stop at “What's the price?”
Ask:
-
What's included?
-
What's not included?
-
What additional expenses should I expect?
-
Which experiences matter most to me?
-
What am I actually getting for my money and vacation time?
That's how we believe travelers should evaluate a vacation.
✈️ Where a Travel Advisor Fits In
Our job isn't simply to find a reservation.
At Melissa & Michael Nicholson – Dream Vacations, we help travelers look at the whole trip—from flights, accommodations and transportation to cruise cabins, excursions, travel protection, accessibility needs and the expenses that may not be obvious from the advertised price.
Sometimes spending a little more creates substantially more value.
Other times, we'll help you identify where spending more simply isn't worth it for the way you travel.
That's Travel Math™ too.
💙 The Travel Math™ Bottom Line
Travel fees will change.
Airfare will change.
Cruise prices will change.
Promotions will come and go.
The important question remains:
What's the best use of YOUR vacation dollars?
Because the goal isn't simply to spend less on vacation.
It's to get MORE from the money, time and experiences you've worked hard to enjoy.
Dream It. Plan It. Live It.
